There was a time not too long ago when certain places were simply considered off limits to advertising. However, with the recent explosion of companies offering bathroom advertising services, it seems that the number of spaces where advertising doesn't appear is forever shrinking.

Yes, it really is a craptabulous business model - people who are sitting in the john are captive audiences and if they didn't bring a newspaper with them, what else are they going to look at besides the bathroom advertising? The graffiti? The offers to "call me for a good time?"

Seriously, people actually do retain what they see in the john and there are a handful of companies that specialize in what are known as "indoor billboards," ads that appear in bathrooms and other indoor locations as opposed to outside. You can make a decent living doing it as well, though more often than not, it's part of a larger advertising agency rather than a bathroom advertising agency exclusively.

How Much Can You Make?

The amount you can make is really up to you. You'd be creating a business and promoting it where you basically act as the middle man between the company that wants to sell ad in their bathrooms and the company that wants to purchase that advertising.

Given that bathroom advertising is a niche market, it makes sense to expand. Most people who are interested in starting an advertising agency do more than just offering this one niche. You could also offer creative services to create the ads that are needed and you could of course arrange for other types of advertising beside bathroom advertising.

Or, if you want to go a more traditional route, you could always become an advertising executive selling ordinary types of ads or billboard space outdoors where it's much more commonly accepted than in the toilet.

Qualifications / Requirements

There are no formal requirements to start a bathroom advertising business however you do need to know something about advertising and how to get contracts for the jobs that you want to do. You'll need to find the companies that want to sell advertising space and the ones that want to buy them after all.

It also helps to have some more traditional advertising experience if you want to get a business off the ground in this specialized niche.

First Steps

Start by working for a traditional advertising agency so that you get an idea of how the market works and what's involved. Then, look into the bathroom advertising niche and start your own company selling such ads.
